Success in our days goes hand in hand with protection as your assets value depends on your ability to secure and maintain them. There is a reason the most successful people have a series of habits which supports their journey to success.

Habits are by definition not a one-time action. In contradiction habits are conscious choices you have to make each and every single day otherwise you are going to slip into habits which will put you in high risk situations and higher threat environments. Every entrepreneur worldwide is trying to learn the habits of the successful people in order to apply it.

Habit #1: Seek awareness opportunities

Technology is changing rapidly and with it any security advice you have been told so far is outdated with new techniques and methodologies. In fact, now we are moving away from systems-centric protection to people centric protection where your behaviors and habits play the bigger role in your success.  Thus, it makes such a difference being constantly updated and becoming aware. Check around you for these opportunities. Attend relevant events and join webinars. Read articles and feed your mind continuously.

Habit #2: They update their systems rigidly and on time

In a world in which we depend on so many systems like our phones, laundry machines, vacuum cleaners you name it with super cool features the negative side lies in the lines of code behind them. That is why most of the companies have a team dedicated to finding mistakes in the code running behind the cool device you use. That is because they are trying to protect you. Even though it is not possible to discover all mistakes they find important mistakes and they fix them with an update. You just have to click the button and install it as soon as it is available.

Habit #3: They avoid connecting to public Wi-Fi networks

From a child who was dreaming of a world with Wi-Fi literally everywhere to becoming a Wi-Fi snob I know, it is a huge difference. But times change, and I can still have internet everywhere without compromising my security at the same time.

Here is the deal. Connecting to a network that is out of your control is dangerous. In fact, is the worst thing you can do for your protection so add a reminder and avoid connecting to public Wi-Fi from now on. Avoid connecting to the internet when you do not really need it and at the same time become more focused on your work with no interruptions from notifications on social media. If you really need to access the internet, then use your phone data plan.

Habit #4: They do not travel with important devices

Whether you travel for holidays or business travelling with a device which holds the keys to your castle is such a mistake. From being stolen to being hacked in a hotel or an airport you are just risking everything. That is why you need “travelling dedicated devices”. How to use those is something I can analyze in another episode.

Habit #5: They backup their data

oh yes. Successful people do not wait for a dumb day to act. They prepare for it in order to never appear or at least if it appears to have the least possible impact to them. Losing data is the real deal especially with ransomware on the loose.

Do you want to know how valuable your data is? Lock it away for a day and see how you feel. Lock it away for a week or a month. How about now? Can you and your business survive without this data? Then you do not need to do anything. Otherwise back up, back up back up!
