The key component of effective protection – Your “protection sweet spot”

I was watching Marie TV this morning and there was this episode regarding the fact that perfectionism keeps you away from success. I always enjoy Marie Forleo’s episodes as they include actionable wisdom you can apply immediately, and I got inspired to write/talk to you about the key component in effective protection. Here is the episode in case you would like to watch is as well. Who knows; it might create inspiration vibes to you as well!

Perfectionism is a nasty thing as it is wasting valuable time and cognitive energy we could direct to something else and create more success. Here is the thing. Nothing is perfect and will never be perfect. However, the meaning we give to that true statement can make a huge difference to our protection. If you interpret this statement with a negative meaning you will either remain stuck and wait until something is perfect or give up and do nothing instead. In case you haven’t figure it out yet; leaving it aside is the worst you can do with your protection. We just have to embrace the fact that we are human and do the best we possible can do. I do hope this is relieving for you.

Your protection sweet spot

So, I would like to introduce to you “your protection sweet spot”. Your protection sweet spot is the place you are when your protection is effective. Visualize it as a scale. On the one side of the scale is in-action and on the other side of the scale is over-action. Your goal is to always keep the ruler of the scale up as the lower it gets the higher your exposure to risk is. Protection needs balance between doing too much and doing nothing. Doing nothing for your protection exposes you to danger. It’s a no brainer. Doing too much for your protection is not serving you as well. Why? If we really go to that extreme level, we have to go back to stone age and that is not what I am proposing. I am not promoting you getting into over-protection and getting obsessed with security. Instead I am talking about effective and usable security because if security is good but not usable you will sooner or later give up on it and the result will be that you will remain over-exposed to danger. When you are in “over-action” you procrastinate, and you waste your time, energy and resources. You do not focus only on what really matters, and you always live in an overwhelm paralysis mode which is not good not only for your security but also for your health as well.

So, now that we explained what you should not be looking for let’s explain what your “protection sweet spot”, that balance point, should look like.

There are seven principles which indicate that your protection is in balance and here they are:

  • Avoidance of any action that is not going to be effective for the protection of your valuable assets
  • Avoidance of the noise and rumors about security. Real protection is clear and effective
  • Proper examination of your threat levels based on impact and likelihood of occurrence
  • Clear representation of your most impactful and higher risk areas
  • Solid measures to design your security in order to effectively cover your most impactful and higher risk areas.
  • Ability to evaluate, in real time, the effectiveness of your protection and
  • Vigilance and eagerness to constantly improving your protection by taking steps in the right direction.

That is why the key component of effective protection is not perfectionism but progress instead.

Let’s not confuse our best effort with perfectionism. Put in quality work and do it strategically. Perfect does not mean living in the success sphere. Progressive quality does. Growth is comprised by progress and your security is a living organism. It has to grow with time.
